Today in the online version of today, I read this:
Anti-casino drive grows 24,400 have signed online petition asking President to 'reject' casino plans
Somehow, the owners of the website and the fine Today journalists has concluded that 24,400 is a sizeable number of people to find this newsworthy to be printed.
24,400 represents the number of people who bothered to sign up. 24,400 may be impressive, but not enough to make a definite conclusion that Singaporeans are against the building of the Casinos.
"The mere presence of a casino will give out "negative energies" and result in social ills that will be felt in time, he said."
"We sign with the conviction that we do not want our children to grow up thinking that gambling is okay — social safeguards (in place) or not"
Come on, FACTS, if you want to convince me that Casino is bad, then provide some black-and-white academic study on how this supposed Casino threat is going to affect us. Ranting about "negative energies" and saying that "you do not want your children to grow up thinking gambling is ok" does not cut it.
FACTS, let me give you an assignment. Instead of ranting and raving , do a study on "The effect of Casinos on Bankruptcy Rates". Do this, then post the results. Let us be convinced.
Provide a real academic study to prove social ills resulting from Casino, instead of putting words in my mouth. No one cares about your views unless it is backed by facts, real study on how it affects Singapore. The whole FACTS campaign is based on statements and assumtions, not facts.
You may have convinced 24,400 people, but you are not going to convince us without facts.
It is a common Singaporean trait to depend on the government to take care of their everything. No one's is the better person to educate your kid, than yourself.
If you don't want your kids to grow up gambling, then teach them not to do it. In this big bad world, there are many influences, good and bad, you are not gonna mollycoddle your kids their entire life. You got to teach them good values and let them make their choices.
Banning everything remotely dangerous is not going help your children one bit.
Against Alcholism? Ban all pubs and bars
Against the Gambling? Ban Casino
Against Smoking? Ban Smoking
As much as I am against the above to a certain degree(moderation is key) , I respect the right of others to choose it. I know some people like to do it, i may critise them, but I do not try to ban it.
I am not saying the FACTS people should not be rallying against the Casino, it is just that they seem to think that their views represent the entire Singapore.
Come on, people. The day our society is truly advanced is when everyone respects each other's right of choice, not when a vocal minority forces their will over the entire community.
Mutual respect and Tolerence, get it?
